What is Motivation?
Starting with your own self motivation, you need to consider the following factors when you consider the motivation skill:
What is the goal you want to achieve How hard you try to achieve a goal The direction you take to achieve the final goal you are trying hard to reach For how long you can keep trying
We coin individual as being motivated when they try hard and long enough to achieve their goals in life or at work.
Whether you seek the skills of work motivation, self motivation or your team motivation, you need to keep one fact in mind: Motivation is different for each person.
Motivation is different for each person:
Each person has different sets of needs or goals that he wants to achieve. Here are some examples of human’s basic needs:
Body needs such as hunger and thirst Physical and emotional security Self and social esteem of being accepted within a group of friends or family.
Individuals are usually concerned with motivating themselves to have their basic needs. Once these are satisfied, new goals in life or at work can be the next goal for self motivation.
Another fact we need to consider before move forward: Most staff dislike coming for work. Their motivation differs depending on the status of their basic needs listed above. For example, most staff come to work to make money to satisfy their body needs. Others who are little bit secure on these fronts, their self and social esteem might dominate in terms of looking for a job title that satisfies their ambition for social status such as being a CEO or general manager of a company.
Understanding your staff needs helps you plan a proper work motivation for each of them and a common tactic for the team motivation. But first, yourself motivation should be preserved. If you are not motivated at work, you need to start with yourself before you create the work motivation or team motivation.
Work Motivation:
From our experience, team motivation is related to the following factors:
Work achievement: Staff who achieve a goal that is well directed by their supervisor are work motivated usually. They come to work the next to make the next achievement milestone.
Recognition: Staff who achieves his or her manager directed goals and work hard and long hours to achieve them expect to be recognized. They would expect usually for salary increase, bonus, or a job promotion. “Thank you” is a great work motivator. Praising loudly is a work motivation that subordinates like a lot. Failing to give it to them fades the work motivation, self motivation and team motivation! Never steal credit of your staff.
The work environment: is a great work motivator. Decent surroundings motivate staff to come to work and feel at home. This factor covers the team the staff operates within and the overall culture of the entity. Free coffee, as simple idea as it sounds, make a big difference. Self growth: is a work related motivator. Put it simply, staff who don’t get promoted in their jobs for long lose the work motivation. A good gauge for self growth at work is the salary increase, job title, authority and responsibilities given to grow the self growth and self esteem.
